China Today

W
ith a 2000 GDP of US$1.08 trillion, China is the world’s sixth largest economy.

China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, upcoming Summer Olympics (for which US$25 billion in new expenditures is expected), high-level of foreign investment, and the development of a more open and rules-based economy all suggest continued rapid economic growth in China
.

Many U.S. companies, such as General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, Motorola, Revlon, GE and others have made significant investments in their Chinese operations.  All of GE’s businesses, for example, are now operating in China through 25 company branch offices and more than 30 joint ventures and wholly-owned enterprises with total investments over US$1.5 billion.

Outsourcing in China

China has long been recognized as a manufacturing source and as contract manufacturing has developed into outsourced manufacturing services, China has continued to be part of this evolution. Flextronics, for example, the world’s second largest provider of outsourced electronics manufacturing, broke ground in April 2002 on a 112-acre facility near Shanghai that is expected within three to five years to be the company’s largest plant in China.

Other segments of the outsourcing industry are beginning to develop in China as well – in particular information technology services and call centers.  According to Gartner, China has 200,000 IT professionals in the software outsourcing business today, is adding 50,000 per year, and will be the third largest source of offshore IT outsourcing sometime between 2007 and 2010.  Additionally, there are more than 37 companies in China providing outsourced call center services with more than 3,200 seats.  Other outsourcing areas include information services (GE electronic data interchange, IBM e-business services), document imaging (Kodak i Center) and logistics outsourcing (China Logistics), just to name a few.

Press Coverage in China

The 2003 China-America Outsourcing Business Development Summit has received extensive coverage in the Chinese press, including: Economic Daily, China Daily, Worker’s Times, Beijing Morning Newspaper, Computer Week, and others, as well as on China’s English- and Chinese-language television.
