IAOP Chapters: Canada (Toronto)
Meeting held June 2, 2010
A meeting of the IAOP Canada (Toronto) Chapter, chaired by Lisa Abe of Fasken Martineau DuMoullin LLP, was held Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Toronto offices of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, 42 Calvin/Riddell, Toronto Dominion Bank Tower, 66 Wellington St W, Suite 4200 in Toronto.
“One of These Things is Not Like the Others: Special Issues in Collaborative Sourcing”
In recent years there has been proliferation of commentary on outsourcing, regarding best practices, trends, and common issues. Yet notwithstanding the volume of available content, there has been a tendency to paint all sourcing arrangements with the same brush. This seminar argues that one category of sourcing - collaborative sourcing - raises a series of unique issues which bear closer examination. Specifically, this session examines co-sourcing and shared services collaborative models, with a view to identifying those elements which differ from a typical outsourcing arrangement, and reviewing lessons learned, in order to ensure the success of such arrangements.

Meeting held - October 22, 2008
The Canada (Toronto) Chapter held their most recent meeting, chaired by Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, on Wednesday, October 22 at the Fasken Martineau DuMoulin offices, 66 Wellington Street West, Toronto Dominion Bank Tower, 36th Floor – Lewtas/Arnoldi Boardrooms, Toronto, Canada.
Chapter chair, Lisa Abe of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin introduced Mark R. McKay of Jones Brown Incorporated and John Beardwood of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP who shared their expertise on the topic entitled “Keeping yourself covered: Insurance issues in Outsourcing Transactions.” Insurance is a form of risk management used to hedge against a risk of contingent loss. For a customer seeking to outsource a system or function, outsourcing transactions can increase this risk. This risk profile can further change where the provider is outside the jurisdiction, or part of a customer multi-sourcing strategy.
In order to improve the understanding of this area, our experts provided an overview of first and third party triggers; the importance of inclusions and exclusions, and looking behind the insurance certificate; how to dovetail the outsourcing and the applicable insurance contracts; multijurisdictional issues; and the role of special risk management vehicles like performance bonds.

Meeting Topic:
Connected Sourcing: The New Strategy Agenda
CEOs’ priorities, the experiences of leading organizations, and emerging technology trends all suggest that by 2010 the world will be even more global and competitive than it is today. Firms will focus more sharply on what they do best, and they will enlist a growing diversity of specialized suppliers for the rest.
In this world, some outsourced services will become highly commoditized while others will be truly differentiating. Organizations will increasingly look outside their walls not just to reduce costs but for innovation - in processes, product and service differentiation - to free up resources, transform their businesses, and facilitate sustainable competitive advantage. As supply networks become more global and complex, winning will depend on transparency, trustworthiness, and reciprocity -- In a word: collaboration.
Join Robert Scott of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Lisa Abe of Fasken Martineau for a discussion of where outsourcing and offshoring is headed in 2010. They will draw upon new PwC research on how collaboration, enabled by new technologies, is changing the business of outsourcing.
Please mark you calendar for these proposed meetings:
September 2007 & November 2007
Proposed topics for upcoming meetings:
· Outsourcing implementation, governance and administration
· Benchmarking and its alternatives
· IT Security Compliance - emerging issues and practical implications for outsourcing
