Oliver Bussman, COP
Chief Information Officer
SAP AG

Oliver T. Bussmann was appointed as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of SAP AG in September 2009. A global expert in Information Technology, Bussmann excels at driving and managing transformational change initiatives across complex multinational enterprises. In leadership roles with IBM, Deutsche Bank, and Allianz (Insurance and Asset Management businesses), he has delivered millions of dollars in cost savings through leading-edge information strategies including outsourcing, shared services and service centralization. He is a recognized industry leader with a portfolio of major business process transformations that have delivered cost reductions, efficiency gains, agility and competitive advantage to leading global corporations.

As the regional CIO for Allianz Group in North America and Mexico from 2006-2009, Bussmann led four major business process transformations that significantly delivered cost savings with 30 percent improvement in efficiency. Ranging from an enterprise-wide shared services strategy to offshoring/outsourcing efforts and a less visible but equally strategic back-office streamlining, these initiatives positioned Allianz with the information infrastructure to compete in global markets today and tomorrow. The shared services strategy earned wide recognition throughout the industry as a pioneering best practice, as featured in a cover story in Insurance and Technology magazine.

In a prior role as Executive Vice President of Information Technology for Allianz Group, headquartered in Munich, he spearheaded IT strategy and operations for the $160 billion global enterprise. Most notably, he drove a groundbreaking IT benchmarking initiative, cutting costs by 25 percent, and launched the first company-wide purchasing organization for information technology. In this role, he first conceived the shared services strategy that he went on to lead and implement in North America.

Before joining Allianz, he was Managing Director of IT for the Private Banking Group of Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt. In this truly global leadership role, he ensured that front- and back-office systems in the Group’s European, American and Asian operations were efficient and up-to-date. One of his most challenging assignments was launching the entire IT infrastructure for the bank’s expansion into France.

He earned an MBA from the University of Muenster, Germany, and completed
the Global Program for Management Development through a combined program with the University of Michigan and the IESE International Graduate School in Barcelona, Spain.

Bussmann has been recognized as an influential leader in his profession and industry. He is an invited member of the BITS Advisory Council, a CEO-driven financial services industry consortium that comprises the largest financial institutions in the U.S.

A true global citizen, Bussmann has an international family, bilingual language fluency in English and German, and professional experience that spans the globe. He is comfortable in a wide range of cultures and geographies, having lived in the U.S. and Europe.

“Becoming a Certified Outsourcing Professional (COP) gives individuals a credible way to establish the level of outsourcing skill they have developed. It also highlights areas that individuals may want to focus further skill development activities on. Through the COP program, IAOP enables individuals to benchmark their skills against others in the industry, and join a community of thought leaders and leading practitioners that actively share ideas and best practices.

IAOP and the Certified Outsourcing Professional Program provide the outsourcing industry with a credible measure of skill and experience that can be used by customers, suppliers, and consultants to measure each other. The experience requirement in particular, helps separate those who have real in the trenches experience from those who have simply read books and taken classes. IAOP is also facilitating standardization of the practice of outsourcing, which will ultimately result in better, faster, and more successful outsourcing projects, and they provide credible data that help dispel common myths about outsourcing both pro and con.”

”The COP designation is an honor, but it reallyis significant because of what it represents. The management of outsourcing arrangements has not been thought of as a profession by most. Through the efforts of the IAOP and the processes and training established in support of the COP program, outsourcing has made great strides as a profession andorganizations can only benefit from this tremendous development.

In the past, the development and oversight of outsourcing arrangements has often been left to operational and procurement staffs to design. The body of knowledge and outsourcing processes that underpin the COP are invaluable tools in the hands of trained professionals. COPs are now able to capably assist organizations with all aspects of the outsourcing process, including the selection of activities to outsource. The lessons learned from these engagements are now being incorporated into the training and ongoing education of COPs and other members of IAOP, keeping these lessons from becoming simply historical anecdotes. This ongoing learning enables all organizations to benefit from what outsourcing professionals and others have learned, creating stronger and more beneficial outsourcing arrangements in the future.”

“There is a huge need for standardization and calibration within the outsourcing industry.  It is paramount that service providers, customers, consultants and legal support move toward common standards, terms, methodologies and processes.  The COP Certification is a critical step in the right direction for closing the gaps that exist today.  This standardization will allow for a more rapid acceptance of outsourcing as a strategic practice. As outsourcing matures in its scope and scale of delivery, both the supply and buy side will benefit from standardization in terms of cost savings, less governance, more controls, healthy and happier successful relationships predicated on ethics, partnership and understanding of roles and responsibilities.

Strong prosperous relationships don’t come to fruition from sprinkling pixy dust and citing “true partnership–motherhood and apple pie”.  It comes from hard work and establishing a framework that is built on action and process.  The COP certification helps to remove some of the variation in the process.”
